Jockey Suspended As Sequel To Race Mishap

An inquiry was held at Gisborne into the mishap in the Maiden Race at the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting on Saturday, when No Wonder, ridden by P. Fenton, fell shortly after, the start. The finding was that no foul riding nor improper practice took place, but H. Callahan, the rider of Defray, was suspended for one month. Fenton escaped injury.

Death of Wrack. The death is reported from Australia of the imported stallion Wrack, the sire of Indianapolis and other highclass performers. Struck Trouble. Although nothing of an official nature was announced, it is understood that an inquiry is pending into the cause of Marsceres stumbling at the start of the final lap of the Ritphie Memorial Handicap at Forbury Park last Saturday. Marsceres was up with the packed field with five furlongs to' go, but struck trouble and stumbled badly. Good-Looking Youngster. One of the best looking of the rising two-year-olds who have made their appearance at Ellerslie is the colt by Iliad from the English mare Anne Shakespeare, who is from the same family as Persimmon, a Derby and St. Leger winner. Under the care of E. George, he is the property of Mrs W. D. Graham, who purchased him at the Trentham sales for 500 guineas. The appropriate name of Stratford has been claimed for him. The Two-Mile Record.

When Spear Chief beat Wotan's Australasian two-mile record in Brisbane recently, the electric timing clock was not operating, but the watchholder was a man of experience and his time was confirmed by other watches: in the trainers’ stand. McCarter! expressed surprise when told about the time, and said Spear Chief could easily have beaten the world's record had he been pushed. Spear Chiefs time, 3.195, was 11- seconds belter than Wotan’s. The’ world’s record is 3.19 1-5, put up by Within the Law, at York, England. Spear Chief carried 9.7, Wotan 7.11, and Within the Law 7.11.

Loss to Racing

The news of the death in London of Mr W. Higgins will be received with regret in racing circles. It is pleasing to recall that in the last year of his life he had the happy experience of breeding and owning a horse of the best class in Beaulivre, and that lie was able to see him race and win. Ho had raced horses for many years, and had good winners in Lucius, Martial Dawn, Kilbronsyth, Callaghan, Joy Bird, Decit, and Debham. Deficit won a Wanganui Guineas in a weak year, and it was not until the advent of Beaulivre that he had a top-class galloper equal to the best classic form. He imported Callaghan and Joy Bird from England, and also other horses, including his recent winner Royal Star 11,, and he also raced horses in Australia. Another good horse to carry his colours this year was Globe Trotter, and it had been one of the most successful seasons he ever had. The late Mr Higgins was for several years a member of the Wellington Racing Club, and had been a steward since 1921,
