Press Reporters Were “Suspicious Characters”
Stop
It was fortunate that only blank ammunition was employed in the military exercises between mounted and motorised troops at Titoki yesterday otherwise two Press reporters covering the day’s activites might have come in for a warm time.
With the object of obtaining the best possible view of the impending mock battle, the Pressmen had moved forward ahead of the Mounted Rifles’ advance guard and secured ,a grandstand outlook over the valley in which the “enemy” was dispositioned. Soon they were spotted by sharpeyed riflemen creeping cautiously up the road behind.
“There’s a couple of suspiciouslocking characters,” remarked one trooper.
Members of the advance party unslung their rifles and prepared for action, and it was only on being informed by a nearby observation officer that the targets represented nothing more threatening than the daily nows that they were constrained from opening fire.
