Japanese Claim Big Successes
(Received 2 p.m). LONDON, May 14. The Japanese army in Central China claims to have routed 26 Chinese divisions and two brigades as the result of the May offensive against the main body of Chinese in the fifth (Hupeh) war zone, says a Tokio message. Master Stroke or Suicide? The Shanghai correspondent of “The Times” s'ays the Chinese in Chungking admit a Japanese surprise thrust northwards, along the east bank of the Han River, but they declare that it is too early to say whether it is a master stroke or suicide. They deny the Japanese encirclement of 26 divisions, and add that the mountainous terrain of Hupeh forbids this.
Japanese planes directly hit over 100 buildings in the treaty port of Ningpo. Ten were killed. The Hongkong correspondent of the British United Press says the Japanese twice lair-raided Swatow, causing death and damage, and striking Messrs. Matheson & Jardine’s offices. The British escort ship Folkestone narrowly escaped machine-gunning.
