Britain and Turkey In Alliance, With France As A Party
(Received 2.30 p.m.) ANGORA, May 13. A N AGREEMENT BETWEEN BRITAIN AND TURKEY WAS ANNOUNCED IN THE .TURKISH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY. THE PRIME MINISTER, RAYFIK SAYDAM, URGED WHOLEHEARTED COLLABORATION WITH BRITAIN IN- ORDER TO PREVENT THE ESTABLISHMENI OF A DICTATORSHIP OVER THE MEDITERRANEAN.
“I ask the assembly’s authcn’isation to march side by side with Britain, said the Prime Minister. “Having passed a great test, the bonds of friendship with Britain constitute one of the bases of our policy.
’According to the Independent Cable Service, the Central News Agency says it learns on high authority that a Franco-Turkish agreement similar to that between Britain and Turkey will be concluded within the next fortnight, and will contain references to the Hatay (formerly the Sanjak of Alexandretta), which will come under Turkish rule when the agreement comes into force.
The French High Commissioner at Beirut, M. Puaux, said in a broadcast: “France remains faithful to her promise to give Syria independence, and she therefore desires, as soon as possible, an agreement with the Syrian Government on the basis of the principles already agreed.”
