Woman Who Had “Two Wives”

SYDNEY. May 14. A remarkable ease of a woman who masqueraded as a man for 51 years and had two “wives” was revealed when Annie Payne, aged G 4; bedame an inmate of the Old Man’s Home at Lidcombe, a suburb of Sydney, last week. Her sex was discovered when she was taken to a bath. The woman lived under the name of Harcourt Payne. She came to Australia from Derbyshire when she was 13 years old, and immediately donned boy’s clothes. Ever since she lias led the life of a man, being employed variously as labourer, traveller, tram conductor, rate collector and town clerk. Both her “marriages.” she said, had been happy. Her last “wife” died only a few weeks ago.
