Excitement Reigns at Kamo
Highly spectacular at times the game- pleased a large crowd. Local supporters had reason to be proud of its Rugby team, which thoroughly deserved to win by 11 points (two tries, one converted and a penalty) to 9 (one try and two penalties). ■Within ten minutes of the start three penalty goals had been kicked, one by Skelton for Kamo and the next two by Masters, C. White, and Moir paying the price for impetuosity. Attacking spiritedly and being much, more mobile than their opponents Kamo soon took the upper hand. Combination between heavy hard working forwards and backs who ran straight upset Old Boys’ strategy. Scores Levelled. * Mulling a well-planted kick by Quinlan, Masters allowed the fast moving Brovvn to gain possession. The Kamo winger fed to lan Symes, playing his first game as a forward, who completed with a great burst of speed. Skelton missed and the score was six all. Spectators ' were on their toes when White drew his man perfectly with a ’dummy and sent on for Sullivan to sprint down the sideline. Saul came across fast for the tackle and Alison intercepted the pass. In and out passing by Whiteman .and Ray cleared the decks* for Old Boys. Ferguson, five-eighths for Kamo, led the counter attack which was in progress at halftime. Although the scores were level Kamo had been definitely on top until this stage. Handling nicely Kamo backs restarted with a succession of thrusts. Quinlan cross-kicked for the Maori All Black trialist. Brown, to take the ball in his stride. Saul pulled him down, and when White flung a 30 yards pass Ferguson all but gathered it in, which may have been an unfortunate rebound for Kamo. Winger Forward Scores. Ftundations for the score which Kamo so richly deserved were laid by - Hart. I. Symes broke clear and passed to Sullivan, who dashed over. Skelton goaled .and Kamo led 11—6. White and Symes further harassed Old Boys defenders, an accidental kick over the goal-line ending the siege. Play swept from one end of the field to the other when Knew headed an-Old Boys’ passing rush. Whiteman, Saul, Ferguson (who picked up a ..difficult pa?s) and Ray handled, a ccfcum being put down near the line as Old Boys claimed a try. Masters bombarded the goal with a -sequence of penalty kicks, one of which sailed inches under the bar. 2 Ferguson Gets There First, After mishandling by the inside had terminated several passing movements, Knew broke away with Harvey Symes in support. The ball was kicked over the line and Ferguson beat two opponents in the race for the try. W. Alison missed. Kamo still led by two points and a thprt shower added to Old Boys’ difficulties. Breaking quickly. White upset their back line while Skelton’s work at full-back was also very sound. Kamo appeared to bo over again when Quinlan cross-kicked for Moir to cross unopposed, but the referee, Mr C. Bevington, called them back for a 25-yard scrum. In a final desperate effort Old Boys camped on their opponents’ line for the last few minutes but the defenceheld in an exciting climax to an exciting game.
