Otiria Defeat Kawakawa

With no score until after 30 minutes of play, Kawakawa was leading Otiria by five points to nil at half-time, but failed to stay the journey after the change-over*, to allow the visitors to return home victors by 10 points to five. The Kawakawa forwards battled well and made use of their superior weight. Sullivan played a good game and was always on the ball. He notched Kawakawa’s only points with a good try, which was converted. The backline was weak, especially in defence, all players showing a tendency to tackle high. Otiria stepped out the fitter side and in the second spell attacked consistently. Packing a light scrum, it was often overwhelmed, but good back play made the game even. First points came to Otiria five minutes after half-time, when P. Cherrington went over. He was followed shortly afterwards by Dan Utuatonga. Both tries were unconverted. The game was clinched for Otiria when, ten minutes before the final whistle. Buck Koreawha potted a spectacular field goal. For Kawakawa, Nutt and Sullivan produced good football in the forwards, while for Otiria W. Cherrington, in the backs, and Beattie, in the forwards, were prominent. Mr R. Sommerviile refereed.
