Improvement Shown In Bay Games

Rugby

There was a marked improvement in. the standard of football played in the Bay competitions on Saturday, and several hard tussles resulted, which proved very spectacular from the spectators’ viewpoint and very instructive to the players in the various games concerned.

Results were as follows: Seniors: Ohaeawai 9 beat Kaikohe 3; Otiria 10 beat Kawakawa 5; Motatau 16 beat Ruataniwha 6. Juniors: Okaihau 16 beat Oromahoe 5; Ohaeawai 40 beat Kaikohe B 0; Opua 16 beat Taumarere 9j Moerewa 11 beat Motatau 0.

The Ohaeawai-Kaikohe senior game resulted in a ragged forward tussle, the backs failing on the few occasions on which they obtained the bail on account of lack of combination. On actual play, a draw would have been a fitting final as the Kaikohe team had bad luck in many of Its attacks, although it was anxious to do too much good on the day. Kaikohe kicked off against the sun, and kept the play concentrated in the opposing territory. In 10 minutes Kaikohe had three attempt at converting easy penalty goals, but T. Webster failed on each occasion.

Just before the end of the spell, the Ohaeawai pack reversed the tables, and kept Kaikohe in a dangerous position, until a penalty was converted for Ohaeawai.

Starting the second spell well, the Kaikohe team again kept Ohaeawai busy, and D. Webster obtained the team's only points by converting a very difficult penalty goal. Shortly afterwards his brother speculated with a drop-kick from the halfway line, which fell just under the bar. It was a great effort and the crowd showed its appreciation. As a result of insufficient training,

the Kaikohe team faded suddenly, and Ohaeawai secured two trios in succession, but failed to convert from handy positions.
