The Army Wins At Rugby

Led by All Black Jim Wynyard, an Army Rugby XV beat Hikurangi 6 —3. Towering above the rest, Wynyard monopolised the line-outs, but Hikurangi quite hold their own in the scrums. As was only to be expected. the combination, of the club side—although it contained several strangers—was superior. Chain passing among the Hikurangi backs saw Pickerall sprint down the line and return the ball to Cunningham who sped through a tackle to score.

This was the only try of the match, La wry, of To Awamutu, landing two penalties for the Mounted Rifles, the second and decisive goal not long before Mr R. Morrison sounded the final whistle.

Of fine physique, the Army pack was a solid one, Munro and Wynyard being outstanding. Tapsell brothers, both first-class players from tne Bay of Plenty, combined and tackled well. Brydon was the best Hikurangi forward, with Hutchings going well in his new position as rover. The backs all played well.

Only Northlander in the Army side, Stockwell went off with a face injury near the end of the game. The teams were: — Army.—Backs: Le Pine, O’Donnell, Austin, Prior. C. Tapsell, Walker, R. Tapscll. Forwards: Munro, Wynyard, Daniel, Kidd, Watson. Gordon, Lawry, Stockwell,

Hikurangi.—D. Taylor, Pickerell, Cunningham, Chi'ssell, White. Lucas, Codling. Brydon. Martin. Thorburn, Amos. McConnell, Whiteman, C. White, Hu tellings.

In a barefooted preliminary match, the Army team (i (tries by Ward and McManihan) beat a Horn Hora-Central combined side II (F. Parkes a penalty goal).
