S.A. Nationalists Protest Against War

(Received 1.0 p.m.) LONDON. May 12. Dr. Malan and Messrs. Strydom, van Dermerwe and Nel, provincial leaders of the South African National [Party, have signed a statement directed at enlightening those unwilling to see South Africa dragged into a threatened war. The statement, after drawing attention to propaganda to render participation unavoidable, adds that the Government has thrown off the mask and only awaits a sign from London, though the majority of South Africans desire neutrality, for which petitions, meetings and protests should be arranged. “South Africa must not be plunged into disaster through a weak, slavish and reckless Government. We do not want a repetition of 1914,” says the statement. The Johannesburg correspondent of “The Times” says a women’s section of the national register is being organised.
