Mrs. John Barrymore, formerly Elaine Barrie, started a suit for divorce IV against the famous American actor on May 3. f She alleged that he threatened to kill her and that he flew into frequent rages in which he cursed and belittled V her. , . , Barrymore’s affairs were further complicated when a St. Louis Hotel secured a warrant for his arrest because a cheque, with which he had made payment for his stay there, had been returned from the bank marked “insufficient funds.” Barrymore later made a statement that a misunderstanding on the matter had been rectified.

Elaine Barrie was the actor’s fourth wife. When suffering from a severe cold in Doctor’s Hospital, New»York, Barrymore received a request from a young woman for an interview to be published at Hunter College. The request was granted and the. .young journalist proved to be Elaine Barrie, who is also an actress. .

In 1936 both Barrymore and Miss Barrie declared that it would be impossible for them to have' a happy married life together but they .were, nevertheless, married later in the year, when he was 55 and she. was 21.
