Fog Detains Liner
LONDON. May 12. Heavy fog encountered by the liner Empress of Australia, on which Their Majesties are voyaging to Canda, has caused the vessel to be brought to a standstill for periods totalling over 17 hours. The maximum speed has been 10 knots in good patches, but the fog has not interfered with the ship’s normal routine. The Queen, wearing a yellow woolly coat and a fawn felt hat, visited the ship’s shop and bought sailor dolls for the Princesses. Afterwards she walked the deck with the King, who was smoking a pipe. After dinner Their Majesties attended the ship’s cinema.
At midnight, ship’s time, the Empress of Australia was 360 miles southeast of Capo Race, the south-eastern point of Newfoundland.
A British Official Wireless message says one of the first important public engagements to be fulfilled by the King after his return from Canada will be attendance at a parade of national service units in Hyde Park on July 2. His Majesty will take the salute.
In addition to representatives of the fighting services, the auxiliary force, civil nursing reserves and other civil defence organisations will be represented.
