DAVIS CUP TENNIS

N.Z. Wins Doubles At Brighton

(Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 12. Winning the doubles at Brighton this afternoon, the New Zealand Davis Cup team is now leading Great Britain by two rubbers to one. The result was:—

C. E. Malfroy and D. C. Coombe beat C. E. Hare and F. H. D. Wilde, 6—3, 2 6—3, 6—2. The Independent Cable Service, describing the doubles, says Wilde made some loose shots in the first set. The New Zealanders captured Hare’s service in the fifth game, in which Coombe played some good lobs. Englishmen Draw Level The Englishmen drew level in taking Malfroy’s service, making the score 33. Driving errors and loose returns, however, told against the Englishmen, and the visitors won the next three games. Better combination and brilliant volleying turned the tables in the second set. Malfroy had fallen into errors, while Coombe was erratic. At the opening of the third set, the Englishman again volleying brilliantly, led 2—o. Their opponents evened the score at 3—3, and went on to win—after taking six of the last seven games.

Hare was placing his returns badly. After slight delay, owing to rain, the Englishmen led 2-—0 in the fourth set, but their errors enabled the New Zealanders to draw level 2 —2. Thereafter, Malfroy and Coombe won comfortably, having collected six games in a row. The remaining two singles will bo played on Saturday, the draw for which is: A. D. Brown v. R. A. Shayes and Malfroy v. Hare. A later message states that the jobbing of flic New Zealanders was consistently brilliant, and prevented the Englishmen from maintaining pressure. The visitors advanced to the net more quickly, and volleyed more decisively than their opponents. Mr. A. Waliis Myers, writing in the “Daily Telegraph,” says the British players were inferior in tactics and confidence.
