Tree-Planting Scheme Detailed By County Council
Following the adoption by the Whangarei County Council of a suggestion for planting trees in various parts of the county as a Centennial memorial, a report was yesterday submitted to the council detailing the different localities in which it is proposed to plant trees. Under the tree planting scheme for beaches, it is planned to establish 557 trees, costing, in all, £69 12/6. Cost of fencing and protection is estimated at £530 8/-, and clearing, planting and cartage at £4l 15/6, making a total cost of £641 16/-.
Planting on public domains, reserves, etc., is planned to require 392 trees, costing £33 5/-. Fencing will cost £B4, and clearing, etc., £29 8/-, the total cost being £146 13/-, Contingencies are estimated at £25, making, the complete cost for the scheme £Bl3 9/-. Sites Favoured. This matter will be placed before a special CentenniaJ, committee tonight for consideration. Details of the various beaches on which it is proposed to plant trees, together with the number of trees, are as follows:—Lang’s beach, Waipu (43), Waipu Cove, and domain (31), Ruakaka beach and domain (115), Ruakaka beach county land (85) , Tamaterau beach (8), Pataua beach and river (66), Ngunguru river frontage (87), Matapoun'-Sandy Bay (15), Tutukaka beach (11), Matapouri beach (56) and Whananaki beach (40). , ! So far as domains and reserves are concerned, the following are being proposed: Waipu parking ground (20), Waipu Caledonian Park (61), Waiotira Showground (102), Maungakaramea Showground (51), Parakao Domain (108), Wairua Falls, Titoki (50).
