Grants Sought Through Political Channels
"These applications have been made through political channels, and sometimes have taken precedence over applications made through the right channel,” commented Mr J. A. S. MacKay, chairman of the Whangarei County Council, when discussing, at the council meeting today, further requests for roads to be set down on this year's list for grant application. “We are in the third year of the Five-Year Plan,” continued Mr MacKay. “and many roads under the first year's allocation have not yet been completed. It is not desirable that new roads should take precedence over roads asked for over two years ago.” Requests had been forwarded to the Minister by settlers interested in the Mangakahia bridge and Sumner Road (Waipu). Nothing is being done by the council in. the first case, but the
second is being investigated. A third request to the Minister concerned Norvill’s Road. Houtu. but this road had already been included In this year’s grant applications.
