Missing Man Found Dead: A Faithful Dog
[Special to “Northern Advocate DARGAVILLE, This Day.
Mr Robert Hemphill, widower, aged 70, of Tangowahine, who has been missing from his home since Sunday, when he left on a shooting expedition, was found dead at noon yesterday on Mr H. Currie’s property. A double-barrelled shotgun, fully loaded, with both triggers cocked, was alongside him, but there were no wounds on the body.
As Mr Hemphill lived alone in a bach, no importance was at first .attached to his failure to return, but when fears for his safety were felt, search parties were organised on Wednesday, and yesterday 50 settlers, under the charge of Constables J. H. Dutemple and R. H. Allen, were engaged. A borrowed dog, which left with Mr Hemphill on Sunday, remained with him until the body was found.
Found Dead.—The chairman of the Peninsula County Council, Otago, Mr Joseph Cross, was found dead in an outbuilding on his farm at Portobello yesterday morning, with .a gunshot wound in his head.
