Dominion Win and Loss In Davis Cup Rubbers

(Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 11. The scores in the first two rubbers of the Davis Cup match, at Brighton (Sussex), were: — C. E. Malfroy (N.Z.) beat R. A. Siiayes (Great Britain), 4—G, G—2, G—2, 5—7. G—3. C. E. Hare (Groat Britain) beat A. D. Brown (N.Z.), 6—3, 6—4, 6—3. Keen volleying gave Shayes the first set, in' which he was helped by a doubtful decision at a vital stage. After Malfroy found length, with slow cut shots to the corners, he forced Shayes into errors. Both gave ragged displays, but Malfroy was steadier and more sure with his ground shots. Shayes fought back, after trailing 2—4, driving and volleying well, to win the fourth set. Malfroy broke through at 3 —3 in the fifth set and raced away to victory. Brown Out-Manoeuvred. Hare monopolised the first set against Brown, who was shaky, and concentrated on his opponent’s backhand, but had insufficient pace on. The Englishman was superior on service and in the driving exchanges, and out-manoeuvred the New Zealander. Brown evened the score in the second set at three, with shrewd, shortangled shots, but he failed to maintain the pressure. The New Zealander came to the not in the third set, but, more confident than his opponent, Hare was the more successful when he, too, made excursions to the net.
