Better Traffic Control Mooted In Auckland

t Special to “Northern Advocate ”] AUCKLAND, This Day.

In the light of investigations made by them recently in Australia, the superintendent of traffic, Mr Cecil Bland, and the chairman of the public safety commltttee, Mr W. R. Fee, made several recommendations to the Auckland City Council last evening for the improvement of traffic control in Auckland.

The reports, which were deferred for consideration at the next meeting of the council, among other things suggested the installing of vehicle actuated traffic signals ,at certain city intersections, the strengthening of the staff of the traffic department, and methods whereby pedestrians and the parking of cars might be more effectively controlled.

An announcement that the by-elec-tion of a Parliamentary member for Christchurch South following the death of Mr E, J, Howard, would bo on Saturday June 3. was made last evening by the Prime Minister, Mr Savage.

The writ will be issued on Monday May 15, and the roll will close at 6 p.m. on that day. The latest day for the nomination of candidates will be on Monday, May 22.

Australian Champion Outboxes Negro Visitor

Fourteen thousand people at the Rushcutter Bay stadium last night saw a gruelling 12 round boxing contest between the Australian middle and lightheavyweight champion, Ron Richards, and the American negro, Ossie Stewart. The verdict went to Richards on points. Stewart was on his knees in the third .and ninth rounds.
