Ritchie Memorial Handicap, of 500 sovs; two miles; limit 4.31. — (3-2) Lightning Lady, 12yds, 1; (5-3) Nell Grattan, limit, 2; (4-5) Horsepower, 24yds, 3. Scratched: Waipahi. Threequarters of a length; half a length. Time —4.35 2-5.
Newmarket Stakes Won By Fairstone
(Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON ,May 10. The Newmarket Stakes, of £3O e'ach, with £IOOO added, for three-year-olds, one mile and a quarter run at Newmarket today, resulted: Fairstone 1. Cockpit 2, Hastings 3.
Gallops At Ellerslie
AUCKLAND, This Day. As the result of rain overnight, the going on No. 2 grass track at Ellerslie this morning was a shade easier than usual. Some useful trials were recorded, the best being those of Silver Quex and Jonathan over six furlongs, while Adsum and Tupeotu shaped well over a round.
Fleetwind got to the end of six furlongs in 1.19, doing it comfortably.
Over. a similar distance, Aero King took 1.21. He ran the first three furlongs in 39 2-5 seconds, and was running on nicely at the end of his work.
Aero Queen and Trevacs reeled off five furlongs in 1.5 2-5, the last half-mile taking 51 3-5 seconds.
The best six furlongs of the morning was credited to Silver Quex, who ran the distance in 1.18, the first three taking 38 3-5 seconds. . Melvanui strode over a round, running the last six furlongs in 1.23 4-5. Electric Spear completed a useful task by traversing his last five furlongs in 1.7.
Elisc came home from the half-mile post in 55 2-5 seconds, without being hurried.
Bright Idea and Surella were on terras at the end of four furlongs, which look 52 2-5 seconds.
Casually At Military Camp
Although 450 men of the First Composite Mounted Rifles have been encamped at Kensington Park for several days, to date only one casualty has been reported. Falling from his horse at 10 o’clock this morning,. Trooper J. Smith, a young man from Waencngo, To Kauwhata, and a member of the Waikato Squadron, was admitted to the Whangarei District Hospital suffering from
concussion. His condition early tins afternoon was stated to be satisfactory.
