Authoi’itative quarters declare that the Scandinavian Powers’ decision to decline a non-aggression pact with Germany and adhere to neutrality is a direct answer to President Roosevelt. Official quarters assert that Scandinavian neutrality has the full approval of the Reich. <• * * • The Hon. Mrs. Edward Lascelles, a sister-in-law of the Earl of Harewood, died after being found suffering from gun shot wounds in the grounds of her home near Leicester. # - * A message from Canberra states that the Minister of Defence, Mr. G. A. Street, announced that Sir Leopold Savile, who was formerly civil en-gineex'-in-chief of the British Admiralty, is coming to Australia to advise on the construction of a dry dock capable of taking a capital ship.
The Birmingham section of the Amalgamated Engineering Union, the membership of which is 35,000, is opposing conscription, and is considering advising members to refuse to serve. Tire decision at present affects only 1200 Birmingham members.
A Moscow communique denies London reports that Britain proposed that the Soviet should guarantee any eastern European State. J»: # >£ Viscount Runciman, Lord President of the Council, who lias been absent from London since February on a health recruiting trip to New Zealand, is expected to resume his duties on Saturday. Mr W. J. Brydon, of Kamo, who was injured in a shooting accident on Saturday is reported from the Whangarei District Hospital to be progressing satisfactorily. It was found necessary to amputate Mr Brydon’s injured foot just above the ankle. Mr Brydon had suffered an injury to his other foot in the Great War.
