Mother Is Your Best Friend
Don’t forget. Northlanders, it’s Mother’s Day on Sunday. YOU know how kind Mother has been to you—the times she has said to Dad: “Oh, no, we’ll not go out tonight, there’s no one to stay home and the children will be lonely”; the times that she’s stayed up sewing so YOU could go to a fancy dress ball. There’s no doubt that Mothers do deserve to have one day of the year set aside in their honour. The whole world thinks so. Many, many years ago an American lady originated the idea of “Mother’s Day.” She told the great American public what she thought and soon Mother's Day was celebrated throughout the whole of the United States.
But good ideas shouldn’t stay in one country. Britons felt that their mothers, too. deserved special thought on one special day of the year, and the Mother’s Day idea has spread all over the British Empire.
The second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day in New Zealand, and that, as you know, is Sunday next. Be sure to wear a white flower all day—that’s an outward sign that you're thinking of Mother. Perhaps you could give her some little gift—just a tiny one bought with your own pece. It’s the thought that counts. And when you hand over the present be sure to say a few words that will show Mother that you have really and truly thought about all the kindnesses she has shown you, and that you appreciate them. But don’t let that end your Mother’s Day. See if you can make next Sunday a holiday for her. Breakfast in bed mightn’t be a bad idea, and perhaps you and Dad could manage the housework just for once. , If you keep Mother’s Day in the true spirit I’ve no doubt Mother will remember it for the whole year.
