Whangaroa Ratepayers Must Awaken

-MR. R. J. PARTOON

“The truck rate system was started, in Whangaroa County a few months ago by less than half a dozen shopkeepers who, as far as can be gathered, are not passing on any saving to the general public,” said Mr R. J. Partoon, chairman of the Whangaroa Dairy Company.

“This system entails carting over miles of roads in two counties from Okaihau, causing needless damage to roads, depriving the Whangaroa Harbour Board of revenue, and it will, if continued, necessitate collection of a special rate from tail ratepayers in the country to maintain the port facilities. Higher freights will be charged by shipping companies who will give a less frequent service instead of an improved one.

“The Whangaroa Dairy Company trade is the mainstay of the port and ratepayers must realised that the truck rate system can only lead to the following: “I.—Expensive 'and needless damage to county roads. “2. —Payment of a special rate to maintain port facilities. “3.—lnvolve the dairy company in greatly increased costs in freights and wharfage and a less frequent service. “Wake up, ratepayers, and stop this short-sighted and selfish policy,” concludes Mr Partoon.
