Town Teams Clash At Kensington

Jack Rocs had both his kicking and running bools on for City, monopolising the scoring against Old Boys. He was tire only inside back on either fide who did not stand flat-footed, and his speed off the mark stood out to advantage.

Donning the jersey again after a spell from the game, King. Old Boys’ new five-eighths, showed few traces of the form which won him honours in the King Country. For such an experienced back to throw passes singlehanded was inexcusable. However, he certainly knows how to go down in the face of a rush. .

Line-kicking of terrific power and good direction was turned on by W. Tapper, Old Boys’ custodian. Apart from a tendency to stray out of position —probably because he has played a great deal of his football as centre recently—he gave a really good exhibition. Taylor, City’s full-back, was only caught, with the ball on one occasion. „ * :f * Halo Abbott has been more impressive than brother Terence in their two appearances so far. Terence is rather slow in his stride. rj * « S Green, is playing the type of football which put him in the running for the Whangarei half-back position, even against such a rival as Codling last season. Ho not only delivers passes which are crisp and clean, but is sound an defence, and quick to break round the side of a scrum either with the ball in hand or at toe. S: * « * Ray is blossoming out into a very handy type of forward. On Saturday lie outhooked Provan consistently, and, for a man of his build, made some surprisingly • quick breakaways. Ferguson was the best forward for Old Boys and Callanan the best in the game. * f,l « * SENIOR B AND JUNIOR. Whangaruru natives will rival Pipiwai if they produce the type of football which they turned on in drawing wffh last year’s champions. The enthusiasm of followers from the respective kiangas spread throughout the crowd. In C. Sterling, who notched two tries, and Pickins, Whangaruru have excellent forward material, and W. Rudolph, who has played for Holdanga as a centre, and W. Heta. exKia Toa winger, add distinction to the backline. ❖ * # On the wing for Pipiwaf, P. Hcrowini used his fourteen stone to great advantage. Ho has pace and determination. R, Tchu, built on generous lines, ran-well with the ball in the forwards. f.t J? ip Manaia would probably have saved the game against Whananaki if they had kept play tight and lot their superior forwards keep command. Walters, Whananaki’s full-back, was sound, while D. McGregor, ex-Wha-ngarci High School player, went well as Manaia’s half. Quigg. who was the outstanding keeper in the senior B competition last season, led the Hora Hora pack to victory over Oncrahi, for whom Joass did not make a mistake at full-back.

Neither Old Boys nor--Central-were at full strength for their junior clash. The James brothers and Weston had a lot to do with Old Beys’ runaway win. Haigh and Stock well gave good service in the forwards.
