Mussolini And Hitler Invincible Against Democracies

LONDON, May 9. T> E-FORE. LEAVING MILAN ON HIS RETURN TO BERLIN, THE GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTER, HERR VON RIBBENTROP, SAID: “The Italo-German pact is the logical conclusion to a condition that has existed for years, but the Axis desired to demonstrate this for the benefit of juridical words —forgers, quill-drivers and prophesying inciters, in order to make it clear that nothihg can interfere with the solidarity of the two nations.

“The democracies may note that thes- - of Signor Mussolini and Herr Hitler is indestructible. They and their peoples want peace.” Herr von Ribbentrop also stated that the Italo-German pact was not necessary, but perhaps it was just as well it was concluded in order to show the world that Italy and Germany were united.

“We have the same destiny, and both want peace,” said Herr von Ribbentrop, “but if the democracies do not leave us in peace Herr Hitler and Signor Mossolini will be invincible.” The “Berlin Lokalanzeiger,” recalling von Moltke’s desire for joint ItaloGerman action, says the idea of increased effect by joint action against a possible enemy on the western front retains its justification. This also applies to the east, where joint interests are more easily protected. Italy benefits from the increased northern protection of her colonial empire, while German warships can use Italian bases in the Mediterranean.

% (Per Press Association. C ipyrlcjit.] WELLINGTON, This Day. The following resolution was carried at a meeting of the Wellington branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants: “That this meeting of the Wellington Society of Railway Servants protests at the attitude adopted by the New Zealand section of the British Medical Association in connection with the benefits accruing under the Social Security legislation, and that we assure the Government of our support in any action it deems necessary to bring the Act into operation in all its phases.”

Shadow Factories Make Australian Munitions

[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] WELLINGTON, This Day. The Australian armament and defence organisation is proceeding rapidly, according to Sir Colin Fraser, of Melbourne, who arrived at Wellington today by the Wanganella. Sir Colin, who is chairman of directors of the New Zealand Petroleum Company, Ltd., was appointed to advise the Federal Government on mineralogical resource aspects during the recent defence discussions in Australia.

Eleven shadow factories had been recently established in Australia to manufacture munitions of war, said Sir Colin.

The manufacture of war aircraft was being carried on by a private company, in which he himself was interested, with a factory at Fisherman’s Bend, on the Yarra River. Production started last March, within a year of the undertaking being launched, and in a few months the factory would be producing machines at the rate of two or three a week. Sir Cclin said that if oil were found in Taranaki or Poverty Bay it would solve one of the most serious problems of Australian and New Zealand defence —the likelihood of this essential war munition being cut off in an emergency.

New Zealand was handier to Sydney and Melbourne as a source ot oil than any cf the world’s existing oil fields.
