Poor Roads And Bridges In Hokianga County

[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] BROADWOOD, This Day.

The condition of the Hokianga County Council’s finances is reflected in the state of the road from Brc'adwood through Runaruna to Pawaranga.

Slips and washouts have occurred at frequent intervals along the route, severely scouring the surface which consequently is in a bumpy condition. According to the Hon. R. Semple’s view the bridges are only standing by force of habit. The bridge near the residence of Mr I. Welsh is in a precarious position, as one of the surface planks is missing, and several others . are so loose that They could be removed with e'ase.

Cars passing over the bridge have kicked the loose boards out of position, and on Friday a motorist put one of his front wheels into a gap. None of the slips is large enough to actually block the road, and the worst, in the vicinity of Runaruna, is being cleared by council employees.

Large Attendance At Russell Funeral

[Special to “Northern Advocate”l RUSSELL, This Day. The respect in which the late Mr Archie Smith, shipping agent at Russell, was held was manifest when more than 100 friends, the majority being members of the Bay of Islands Waterside Workers’ Union assembled to pay their last tributes. The funeral services held at the home and at Longbeach cemetery were conducted by the Rev. C. G. Palmer, vicar of the Bay of Islands diocese. There was a large number of floral emblems.

Road Improvement Near Waimate North

[Special to "northern AdvOcate”l KAIKOHE, This Day. The grading of the main road from Waimate North to the Kerikeri turnoff has now been completed by the Bay of Islands County Council’s grader. Partly as a result . of the heavy rains experienced a few weeks ago, the road had commenced to cut up, and the surface met'al had been thrown aside. The surface on the whole remained quite solid, although in one or two places mud-holes were to be found. However, the road is now in excellent order again.
