Carriers As Agents For Meat Bayers
Mr W. Wakelln supported an application made to No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr E. J. Phelan, yesterday, by Mr R. S. Forsyth (Mr R. Wyatt) for an extension of goods carrying license to include all northern counties ,and the cartage of live stock. Messrs A. Christie and F. Elliott stated that an operator resident in the Gtakairangi-Riponui district'would be of great assistance to settlers. Practically every carrier in the North held ,an agency for a meat exporting firm, said Mr E. V. Ralls Without commission so earned, it would be impossible xo carry on at the present low charges. Mr Phelan: “Wouldn’t it be natural, if one firm pays you a commission and another does not, for you to put the pigs though the firm that does?” “Don’t Pinch Stock.” Mr Rails: “No. The instructions of the vendor must be carried out.” Unless a firm is specified by the farmer, pigs are sent through the firm for which the carrier holds an agency. “We don’t pinch stock from one firm to give it to another,” Mr Ralls said. Purchase by his firm of a service previously operated in the same territory by Mr H. Clark had been largely because there was insufficient business for the two. Co-ordination would make for more regular services. Mr Wakelin said that Mr Clark had sold out purely for health reasons. Decision was reserved.
