Canada Prepares Defences
OTTAWA, April 26. In moving the 63.000,000 dollars defence vote in the House of Commons, the Minister of Defence, Mr. lan MacKenzie, announced a three-year agreement with Britain to train Royal Air Force pilots in Canada. The Minister also said that negotiations were proceeding for the purchase of a destroyer from the Admiralty to augment Canada’s four present destroyers and three minesweepers. Canada no longer could rely on protection from the British Navy. The paths from which attack might come must be patrolled ceaselessly. Aircraft formed the first line of defence, then the navy and the army. The Government was still opposed to conscription or to sending an expeditionary force overseas.
The Norwegian-America liner, Oslo Fjord, bringing the Crown Prince Olav and Princess Martha to New York for an American goodwill tour, rammed and sank the pilot boat in a fog in the outer harbour. The latter’s crew of 26 abandoned the boat, and were rescued by the Oslo Fjord lifeboats. The liner was not damaged
