Primary School Uniform

Introduction of a school uniform for Whau Valley primary pupils has been a matter of considerable discussion for some time past. The suggestion was first made by the headmaster, Mr Bowman, in September, when authority was given by the school committee for the calling of a meeting of mothers. There w.as a large attendance of ladies, who, on a vote being taken, were decidedly in favour of uniforms. Subsequent meetings of mothers v/ere held, when the proposal was further advanced.

Press Excluded.

Parents were given a further opportunity to discuss the subject in detail on Monday night, when an annual meeting of householders was summoned by the committee. After Mr M. W. Porter, chairman of the committee, had outlined steps taken in connection with the uniforms, Mr C. L. Dent moved, and Mr E. B. Glanville seconded, that the press be excluded from the discussion.

This was decided upon by 15 votes to 10, and the press withdrew. Subsequently, those present endorsed the suggestions for the school uniform as framed by the ladies committee, ',as follows. —

Winter Dress. Girls: Dark navy blue gym. dress; tussore silk blouse, navy hat with navy badge and band; black shoes and stockings preferred, tout optional. Boys: Navy pants; grey flannel shirt; skull cap; black shoes and socks with blue band on top. Slimmer Dress. Girls: Cambridge blue tunic frock; navy blue buttons and collar; white panama hat -with school band and monogram; shoes and socks optional. Boys: Same as winter, except for grey sun helmet and lightweight cotton shirt. Both boys and girls will wear a navy blue blazer bearing the school monogram. In ,a statement made yesterday, Mr Porter expressed the hope that as the uniform has been decided upon, as many parents as possible will give their co-operation. This was most desirable, although there was no definite

obligation -ape n pupils attending primary schools to wear uniforms.
