Co-operation For Pig Men’s Benefit
Co-operation between the Department of Agriculture, the Fields Division and the Northland District Pig Council is expected to prove an advantage to pig breeders throughout the district. At the annual meeting of the council. yesterday, Mr T. Hankin, of the Department of Agriculture, explained that every endeavour was being made to co-operate the service being given to pig-breeders. The Northland district was a difficult one to organise, and for this reason, particularly, was co-operation between the inspectors and officers of the departments and the council necessary. Mr J. M. Thompson (Kaitaia) explained that there was much that the clubs’ own selection committees could do to take some of the work off the supervisors’ shoulders. Council in Difficulties. Some criticism had been levelled at the council’s system by Mr A. F. Cates. Awakino Point. “It appears that the council has got into financial difficulties during the past year,” he said. “It seems that wes
have been rather let down. Our club bought a good sow, but we have not had the desired assistance from the council. The circular issued suggesting that the Fields Division and the Department of Agriculture could be called upon for advice made us distrustful of the original intention of the movement.”
Mr H. W. James, chairman of the council, explained that, once clubs were functioning and had gained a certain amount of knowledge, they need not have so much attention from the supervisor, who could then go into non-club areas and build up the movement there. The stock inspectors and Field Division officers could assist in giving advice to established clubs in the absence of the supervisor. It was decided to consider mapping out a definite itinerary for the supervisor.
In view of the international situation, and lack of trained soldiers, the Danish Government is calling up unusual numbers of the army and navy. It is understood these are 8000 in the 1938 class and 1000 members of the navy reserve.
