The Hon. Walter Nash, Minister of Finance and of Marketing, who leaves for England next week to undertake important negotiations. Mr Nash has been prominently in the forefront since the Labour Government came into power in 1935, being directly responsible for such sweeping legislation as the guaranteed price to dairy farmers, the inauguration of the Social Security Scheme, and, more recently, the imposition of farreaching import regulations. Born in Kidderminster in 1882, Mr Nash spent his youth in a legal office, and was then for ten years in a cycle business in Birmingham. He came to New Zealand in 1909, representing English manufacturers. He was secretary of the New Zealand Labour Party from 1922 to 1932 and was the Dominion’s delegate to the International Labour Conference at Geneva. He was delegate to the bi-ennial conference of the Institute of Pacific Relations, Honolulu, in 1927 and in 1929 became member for Hutt.
