Successful Record of M. B. Edwards’ Horses

Although primarily identified with the sport of trotting, in which he has made a great success with the big team he has in work at Yaldhurst, M. B. Edwards has done well since he became associated with galloping. His wins have included a number of important events, among them being the Wellington Cup and Great Easter Handicap with Ponty, the Winter Cup with Wino. and the Great Easter Handicap again with Cocksure. Cocksure's Great Easter Handicap was a happy result, as it was achieved with a horse that proved difficult to land at the post at his best. Cocksure is to have a rest, now and it will benefit him, but doubtless he will be ready to show more good form early next season.

Gironde and Swingtime showed useful form at Riccarton and they should do even better later in the season, as they are to be kept going, along with Phenomenal, an improving novice. Ponty had to miss the Easier racing, as the ground was 100 hard for him, but he is being kept in exercise, so it will not be difficult to get hifn ready as soon as the tracks become more favourable. It is intended to prepare him for hurdle racing, a department in which lie should achieve success. , Edwards also has a number of youngsters in work and they are shaping well under his guidance. A yearling colt by Hunting Song from Hinewai, by Chief Ruler from Rewa Rewa, has been started on his education. This youngster is related to Rosefeldt and Tortulla, two New Zealand Cup winners.

AN ESCAPE. It is said that if Defaulter had won the Sydney Cup it would have cost the fielders £70,000 as the second leg of the Gold Rod double. AUSTRALIAN PATRONAGE. There has been a number of additions to R. S. Bagby's Ellerslie team since Easter, among them the three-year-olds Brethren and Wintcrset, both owned by the Melbourne sportsman, Mr Sol Green. Brethren is a chestnut gelding by Verbius from Filial, and he won two races in Melbourne last season, one of which was the Gibson Carmichael Stakes at Flemingtoh, in which he carried 8,5 and ran the seven furlongs in 1.25 : , ! . Winterset is a brown gelding by Son o’ Mine from Winter’s Dream, and was unplaced in his four starts last season.
