Human Skull Found On Hills Suggests Tragedy
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] PALMERSTON NORTH, This Day.
A human skull, bearing mirks of a wound that could have proved fatal, wa: found on the hills on the northern side of the Manawatu Gorge. The grim discovery was made near the crest of a hill, overlooking the second railway tunnel from the Ashhurst end of the gorge.
Two wounds were visible on the right-hand side of the head toward the top and a little behind the eyes. Each is something over an inch in length, and only one-eighth of an inch wide, and both penetrate into the brain cavity. They are believed to be consistent with wounds that might be caused with the point of a sharp slasher or a similar instrument.
Tiie remains were found by Mr J, C. Bolton, but as there are a large number of wild pigs in the vicinity, this could account lor the breaking down of Ihe skeleton. There is no clue at the moment as lo the identity of the man who met his death at or near this spot, or even as to whether he was a Maori or aEuropean.
