4' * IHE: vegetable garden Sow onions, radish, broad beans, cabbage, cauliflower, prickly spinach, parsley and parsnip. Sow onions for spring planting. Good drainage,; a good soil, and a sunny position are necessary. Plant out cabbage and cauliflower. Prickly spinach is the most suitable kind for winter. Dig vacant plots, and so green crops for digging in later. Lupins oats, vetches, or mustard are suitable. Dry weil before storing pumpkins or marrows. Look over those stored earlier. Failures in the orchard should be noted, and arrangements made for replacements. Remove spent crops as soon as possible, and clean up the ground. Leaving useless rubbish lying about is looking for trouble. Plant out strawberries in well-prepared ground. Firm the ground before planting. Prepare the ground for planting new fruit trees. ...a; THE FLOWER garden Dahlias that have very little tubdr should be left }n th 6 ground during the winter. If considered necessary they may be removed to bettor drained soil. { ; Perennial plants may be lifted and divided. With most of these deep digging and manuring are necessary for best results. Remember that polyanthus requires a good deep rich soil for best results. Plants may be divided or seedlings planted. Transplant rooted slips into their permanent positions. Divide primroses, pieotees, dianthus, etc. “t Iceland poppies are gross feeders, but care should be taken hot to overdo the nitrogenous manure, or rot will set in. Time is necessary for healthy plants. For success with winter flowers, the bods should bo well raised above the surrounding ground. Cyclamen in pots will be growing well now. They may have weak liquid manure occasionally, when they show signs of flowering. , . Sew seeds of sweet pea, nemesia. schizanthus, pansy, ursima, gedetia, clarkia, shirley poppy, calendula, cornflower, Virginian stock, kingfisher daisy, candytuft, nemophila, kaulfuscia, heliophila, linum rubrum. The rock garden may need renovating at this season. Some plants may bo cut back, others may bo divided, or cuttings planted. Bare patches may be filled in with dwarf annuals or small bulbs. The work of planting annuals and bulbs of a spring show 01 bloom continues. Most of the bed should be filled by the end of this month.
