Federation Of Labour To Start Campaign
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] WELLINGTON, This Day.
A clear statement was m'ade this morning by Mr F. G. Young, president of the Auckland Council of the New Zealand Federation of Labour, that the federation realised the need of strengthening the land defences of New Zealand.
The decision of a special committee was to start an active campaign within the trade union movement, with a view to enrolling recruits for the Territorial Army.
Mr Young pointed out that his council w‘as opposed to a national register, or to any private committees set up to deal with the defence of New Zealand, but it was willing to give the utmost support to the defence forces set up under the control of the Government and in line with the Government’s policy. All local authorities in England, Wales and Scotland have been asked on behalf of the Government to arrange that priority is given to civil defence matters over all other business for the next three months.
