Destruction of French Liner is Part Of Sabotage Plot
(Received 2 p.m.)
LE HAVRE, April 20. A WARRANT HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THE ARREST OF AN UNKNOWN PERSON FOR DESTROYING THE LINER PARIS, WHICH, AS THE RESULT OF A FIRE, SANK IN LE pAVRE HARBOUR YESTERDAY.
It is now officially admitted that the Surete Generale (French Scotland Yard) received last Saturday a warn ing that attempts would be made to sabotage transatlantic liners, and it was feared the first blow would be against the Normandie, on which the watch was trebled.
The warning came from Nice, wh ere a woman overheard a conversation in a hotel detailing plans to bomb the liners.
Nine cases of the art treasures ready for transhipment to the New York World Fair were removed from the vessel, and it is hoped to save the remaining case, which contains five small sculptures.
The Minister of Merchant Marine,
M. Chapedelaine, has arrived for an inquiry into the fire which destroyed the liner Paris when lying at Le Havre. In spite of official reticence, the press is unanimous that the outbreak is .attributable to a foreign Power.
The newspapers pillory the authorities for their failure to keep watch on ships in port, recalling that this is not an isolated case.
