Unveiling Of Ihaka Memorial At Te Kao

Several thousand Maoris from all parts of Northland, with representatives frtun other districts are expected to be present at Te Kao on Sunday for the unveiling of a granite obelisk over the grave of Eru Ihaka, paramount chief of the Aupouri tribe, whose death occurred two years ago. A party of about 30 Auckland Maoris wore due to leave the city this evening by motor bus for the North. It was thought possible yesterday that Sir Apirana Ngata, M.P., would be present at the ceremony. Established Dairy Industry On Gumfields.

Eru Ihaka, who was born at Te Kao in 1876, was ,a notable leader of his ‘ people. He was mainly responsible for establishing the dairy industry in the district when gumdigging as a means of livelihood failed in about 1927. He was also chairman of the school committee, a clerk of the Mangonui Maori Council, and a lay reader of the Anglican Church.

Orbmahoe Maori School. Two extra class-rooms have bean added to the Oromahoe Native School and hot and cold showers have been installed, as well as the sinking of a bore to ensure an adequate supply of water at ,all times. The school is a splendid asset to the district as it now includes cooking and wood-work classes.
