Objection To Folk Dancing At School
F Special to “Northern Advocate"] PUTARURU. This Day. In the eyes of a parent of a boy pupil of the Futaniru District High School, folk dancing is a “sissy” pastime.
The parent told his son to refuse to take part, and the parents of two other boy pupils also objected to folk dancing. The three boy pupils, on the instructions of their parents, refused a month ago to take part in folk dancing with girls, and were suspended by the headmaster, Mr R. G. Hutton. “Folk dancing has been taught in the school for years, although some pupils, on religious grounds, have not taken part.” said Mr Hutton last night. “Three pupils a month ago refused to take part in the folk dancing, giving no explanation beyond saying that they were doing what their parents told them. I suspended the boys for disobeying the * teacher's orders.”
Two of the boys returned to school yesterday, but the third is still absent.
