Whangarei Racing Club’s Autumn Meeting Opens

PROBABLY THE ONLY NORTHLA NDERS WHO DID NOT WELCOME 1 the advent of the long awaited rain were racing ENTHUSIASTS INTENT UPON ATTENDING THE OPENING DAY OF THE WHANGAREI CLUB’S AUTUMN FIXTURE AT KENSINGTON PARK TODAY. ■ However, the weather cleared shortly before the commencement of the racing. There was only a fair attendance early in the day but upon the arrival of the race train the attendance assu med proportions more in keeping with the occasion. The track was in good order, the early morning rain having the beneficial effect of easing the going. With very large acceptances in most events, there should be good fields on both days.

Further improvements to the course, in use for the first time today, were the subject of eulogistic comm ent by visitors.

there was not much change, Tooley Street puting in a fast run at this stage. Crossing the top the order was Valdene and Anion together, with High Tea, Tooley Street, Sergia and Te Hai next, and Tybalt and High Tea following. Valdene was showing the way to Tooley Street and Anion as they turned for home with High Tea and Sergia next, and Te Hai coming through. Valdene and Anion weakened over the last stages, and Tooley Street got up to score by a neck from Sergia, who came home well, with Te Hai "finishing on in third place. Anion was fourth, followed by High Tea, Gay Rebel, Valdene and Glen Abb. NORTHLAND HACK HURDLES.

When they were let go, Trevace and Midland were the early- leaders from Summary, Ohmaha and Silver Cloud, with the others several lengths away. There was not much change crossing the top, and Trevace and Midland were first into the straight from Summary, Silver Cloud on the fence, and Ohmaha handy. Trevace looked a winner 100 yards from the post, but Silver Cloud, finishing gamely, got up to beat him by a nose, with Ohmaha a head further back.

He was a long way back until half the journey was covered, but put in a fast run, and was in front at the straight entrance. He won easing up by a good margin. British Sovereign came home solidly over the last couple of furlongs, and beat Chief Lap, who had every chance, for second money.

Midland was fourth, followed by Prival and Enlightenment, with the others taxiing off.

There were exceptionally heavy scratchings for this event, only nine of the 22 horses facing the starter.

As they passed the stand, Chief Lap had charge from King Musk, Cloonen, Brilliant Acre and General Riske, with Adsum and Agog next, and Airam last. The order along the back was Chief Lap, Cloonen, King Musk, General Riske and Brilliant Acre, with Agog moving up. There was not much change across the top. where Agog put in a run to lead into the straight from Chief lsap, King Musk, Cloonen and British Sovereign. Agog was not troubled in the run home, and scored by four lengths from British Sovereign, who beat Chief Lap by two lengths. King’s Lancer was fourth, followed by Cloonen, Airam, who was finishing on, and King Musk.

There was a surprise in the Trial Stakes, victory going to Clipper who had done little racing and returned his supporters nearly a third of a century. He was handily placed at the turn* and finished very gamely over the last half furlong. Solitary was always in the picture and ran a good race, but the favourite Bronzeshar ■was a long way back in the middle stages and did well to , finish in a place. N

When they were let ‘go Solitary, White Foam and Bonny Gaze began best and, crossing the top, True Measure was up with White Foam, and this pair with .Solitary led into the straight, with Cliper moving up and Bonny Gaze and Landcourt next. Responding well over the final stages Clipper got up to win by a head from Solitary with Bronzeshar one and a half lengths away. Chandlery wai fourth, followed by White Foam, Landcourt, Imperator and Bonny Gaze. A heavy shower fell while the race was being run.

In winning the Stewards’ Handicap, Brazilian was responsible for an attractive performance. He was never further back than fifth and when he put in his claim in the straight he quickly caught the leaders and won going away. Aero King was always handy to the pacemakers, and he fought on very gamely in the run to the post. Gay Seton ran his usual honest race. Corato gave a bit of trouble before the start, as also did Triune, the latter losing a bit of ground at the start. Gay Seton was the early leader from Aero King, Corato and Brazilian, but crossing the top Corato was clear of Gay Seton, Aero King. Trilliarch and Brazilian. Corato held his advantage into the straight from Aero King and Gay Seton, with Brazilian, Trilliarch and Silver Eagle next. Corato tired half way down, and Aero King and Brazilian challenged, the latter getting the verdict by a length from Aero King, with Gay Seton half a length away. Corato was fourth.

The victory of Tooley Street in the Mclnnes Memorial was a first-class one, as he was well back in the early statges, but gradually improved his position and came home very attractively to win by a narrow margin. 'Sergia was in a handy position, as they raced along the back, where Te Hai Was in the middle of the field. They both finished on solidly over the last couple of furlongs to fill the minor places respectively. Anion, Valdene. Tybalt and Scrgia were first to show up, and passing the stand Anion was showing the way to Valdene, Tybalt, Glen Abb, and Sergia with High Tea, Te Hai. Gay Rebel, and Tooley Street next. Along the back.

It is announced from Mexico City that negotiations have been completed for a barter deal between Italy and Mexico for an exchange of 2.500,000 dollars worth of petroleum for 2,000,000 dollars worth of rayon and 500.000 dollars worth of machinery.
