What Unions Should Aim To Do For Maoris
The Ngatine sub tribe is to have nothing to do with the formation of a Maori Workers Union.
Suggestions for organisation on Union lines from Messrs P. Paikea M.P. and M. McCallum, M.L.C. were discussed by a gathering of 250 at the Waiomio marae on Tuesday. Canon W. PI. Cherrington strongly advised the Maoris to join; If the union advised them to grow their owft crops. (Cropping, he said, was rapidly declining among the Maoris.)
If it advised them to milk their cows regularly, and’ to clean their houses for the sake of health.
If only men on Public Works and other Governmental jobs were required to join, the Canon advised those present to look before they leaped. Independence in all matters should be the watchword.
Other speakers followed in similar strain, and. on the motion of Mr Riri W. KAwiti. the Ngatine sub tribe decided not to participate in the union.
