Pearson and Matheson Add 88 Runs

fSpecial to “Northern Advocate”l AUCKLAND, This Day.

Auckland were in a difficult position this morning, when they resumed their match against Julien Cahn’s team with eight wickets down for 175. There were four men left the teams batting 12, and for a period when Pearson and Matheson were paired in an excellent partnership, there were prospects that the follow-on might be avoided.

It was necessary for Auckland to make 307 to prevent them going to the wicket again. When the score had reached 263 and 88 runs had been added, the spin bowler, Smith, got a well earned reward by breaking the partnership, Matheson was tempted to leave his crease for a big hit, but missed and w.as bowled.

First Ball

There was still hope when Burke

partnered Pearson, but this was shattered when Smith terminated Pearson’s best innings for an Auckland side. To complete his bag of three wickets Smith got the last man, Cowie, 1.b.w., first ball, .and Auckland were all out for 270. Walsh did not add to his five wickets on Saturday, but, like Smith, he often had the batsmen troubled when the pair were endeavouring to break the stand.

Matheson made ,a bright start against Walsh, taking seven off the opening over in which the slow trundler did not find his length. He then settled into his characteristic style, playing a dead bat and awaiting ,a loose ball to score from.

Pearson added ten to his score and was then tied up by Smith for an over, surviving a confident l.b.w. appeal.

Getting down the other end through a smartly run single, Pearson square cut Walsh to the boundary; but twice got the benefit of l.b.w. appeals afterwards. He brought 200 up. Close Shaves.

With 35 scored in half ah hour, Pearson got ,a.' surprise when a shooter from Walsh went under his bat dangerously close to the stumps. The attack was varied by replacing Smith with Jackson, also a spin bowler and Pearson reached his half century off him.

The advent of the fast bowlers was appreciated, and another 50 runs were added, Matheson occasionally driving to the boundary or turning Watts off his legs. Phillipson nearly got Matheson’s leg pin when he had reach 40, and next over Smith replaced Watts. Matheson recklessly went out to drive him, missed, and was bowled. The partnership had put on 88 runs. —263—9—42. Auckland still needed 44 runs to avoid a follow-on when Burke joined Pearson, but the latter’s sterling innings of 76 was terminated when Smith bowled him in his next over. Cowie was given out l.b.w. off the first ball he received. Scores.—
