Maoris Who Stole Cheque Are Fined £lo
Admitting the theft of a cheque for £B, two young Maoris were each fined £5 in the Magistrate’s Court before Mr. G. N. Morris, this morning. Defendants were Wynyard Ropere Tipene, farmer, aged 24, employed by the Native Department on land development work, and Daniel Shortland, labourer, aged 22. Both defendants pleaded guilty. They were not represented by counsel. Detective J. B. Finlay, who took the case for the police, said that Davis Tipene had lost a cheque for £8 from the Native Department. j Tipene had warned the natives in! the district against cashing the cheque] if it was found. ! Cheque Cashed !
A girl had found the cheque and | given it to defendant Tipene. who I had brought it to Whangarei. He had met Shortland while in Whangarei and the cheque had been endorsed and cashed at the Farmers’ Trading Co. Tipene had given £1 to Shortland, keeping £7 for himself. “It is fortunate for them that they are not being charged with forgery,” commented Mr. Finlay. “I do not think it advisable to let you go on simply refunding the money,” remarked Mr. Morris. Fines of £5 were inflicted in each case, Tipene being ordered to refund £4 and Shortland £l.
