“Gateway” Role Pleases Don Ameche
For his part in 20th Century-Fox’s “Gateway,” handsome Don Ameche has a special relish.
He gets the girl!
In his two previous pictures—“ln Old Chicago,” with Tyrone Power and Alice Faye, and “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” likewise with Power and Miss Faye—as far as Don was concerned, it was a case of “boy loves girl, boy loses girl.” ?
But in “Gateway,” dramatic story of the most dramatic spot in the world, Ellis Island—Don brushes aside all obstacles to win the hand and heart of flame-haired Arleen Whelan, 20th Century-Fox’s sensational new star discovery.
“While it’s nice,” smiled Don, “to! win the sympathy of the audience as a disappointed swain, it’s nicer still, occasionally, to have the. audience sharing in your happiness at the fadeout.”
Gilbert Roland and Lyle Talbot are the two principal hurdles Don must surmount to win Arleen.
“WELL CAUGHT.” Arleen Whelan, who co-stars with Don Ameche in 20th Century-Fox’s “Gateway,” is the daughter of Arthur Whelan, one-time Western league baseball catcher in America. The young miss proved during the filming of the picture that “it’s in the blood” by a one-handed catch of a valuable piece of property glassware as it fell from a table. “Over the plate,” she grinned.
