Detection Club Oaths
By the way, Miss Dorothy Sayers recently addressed a publisher’s luncheon in London and told the world that accredited writers of detective fiction have formed an exclusive club in London. Every member on being admitted takes an oath: (1) To show every clue to the reader at the same time that it is shown to the detective; (2) not to make excessive uge of hypnotism, divine revelation, jiggerypokery, trap-doors, Chinamen, or mysterious poisons unknown to science; (S) not to harm the King’s English; and (4) to respect one another’s plots. Miss Sayers contended that detective fiction was the only brand of literature which consistently made virtue exciting. The detective story was highly moral, both to read and write.
