Are They Tuataras?
[Special to "Northern Advocate ”] TE AROHA, This Day. A number of lizards, thought to be tuataras, have been discovered at the extreme end of Morgantown, Te Arohs. , < The site of the discovery is near the spot where a lizard of unusual colour and shape was found some months ago, but which was unfortunately lost while being sent to the Auckland-Museum for identification. The lizards apparently have their headquarters in the middle of a patch of scrub and blackberry. Several have been seen entering the scrub, which, was gradually cut away until the ' bentre revealed 'a small burrow worn, by- a mountain streamlet. A .close watch is being kept on the spot,"-’ The finder, Mr J. D. Gumming reports that the specimens he saw were;:lß inches long. Wifh the exception of one or two tuatgras that have been reported in various parts of the mainland, they have been found previously only on the. Poor Knights, off the Northland roast,, and on Stephen’s. Island, in Cook ‘ Strait.
