The First Mice

(By Willie Lament, Mareretu) LongX long ago, there were only two mice in the world, a male white one and a female brown one. These two mice married one day and went to live in a giant’s barn which stood three miles away. They made a nest in a sack of straw, and settled down. Soon they had twenty-four babies, twelve male white ones and twelve female brown ones: Among the white ones was one which was larger than the others so they called ITim Prince White Mouse. Among the brown mice was a large one, too. She was called Princess Brown Mouse. One day just after rain had been falling, the sun was shining brightly so the parents went out in search of food. The sack of straw had been; dampened and made sodden. The giant came to his shed. He went so close to the nest of mice that they could not gather their breath to squeak. When their parents came home, however, they soon forgot their fright. Out ran the baby mice and learnt to search for food. In a few months the Pripce and Princess were married. They chose the corn store for a home and like their parents lived happily together for ever so long.
