Northland Chilled Steer Championships
The 23 beasts: entered in the Northland Chilled Steer Championship at
the Waiotira Show are to be photographed for inclusion in the Northland Court at the Wellington Exhibition.
The class was easily the largest of its kind ever assembled in the province, where development of the chilled beef trade is of first importance. For proper grassland management on hilly country, heavy stock is. necessary to supplement sheep and keep rough grass and scrub under control. E. A. Cliff’s Double. No better examples of the fine Foiled Angus and Hereford herds established in Northland could be found than these at the Waiotira Show. The class for single steer, most suitable for chilled beef trade, resulted: E. A. Cliff 1 and 2, Sloane Bros. 3, N. Mason 4. To win first and second places in such a strong competition was a fine achievement for Mr Cliff. who has properties at Waiotira and Paparoa. With a yearling Hereford bull, bred from a sire purchased from Mr Cranston’s stud, Wanganui, Mr Cliff also took the male championship in beef breeds. ■
Furthest afield competitor, Mr N. Mason, of Maromaku, secured fourth place in the chiller steed championship, ship.
Judging at Works,
For the chilled trade, it is necessary that killings should be delayed until shipping is available. Consequently, the 23 steers will be held at Waiotira for a fortnight before being chilled at the A.F.F.C. works, where they will be judged on the hooks by the meat graders. Waiotira Show officials, exhibitors in the class, and other farmers interested will attend at the works to glean information.
The steers will also be photographed for a second time—on this occasion their carcases being the subject. On arrival at the Smithfleld market, the final judging will take place.
Future Assured,
So popular has been the class on its first, appearance that Mr S. W. Crawford, secretary of the Waiotira Show executive, anticipates that the prizemoney of £3O will be increased, and that the entry next year will, be much larger.
