Entirely Voluntary

The consumption of the milk ration is entirely voluntary, and it has been found that over all schools about 80 per cent, of the children accept the milk. The supply is by private contract and subject to strict supervision by the Department of Health. Milk supplied in the Whangarei district is from farms in the surrounding area, from which, it is conveyed to Whangarei, where ,a modern plant pasteurises it. A high standard of hygiene is maintained, and at no period is the milk touched by human hands. With the exception of one or two schools, which have their supply delivered by means of rail, the milk used is all morning’s milk, which means that the children obtain the milk only a few hours after it leaves the farms. From the moment it is pasteurised, the supply is kept at 40 degrees, so that it makes a cool drink for the children.
