MADRID, March 12.
In spite of the Republicans’-: claim that the Communists have surrendered, bitter fighting continues in, Madrid.
Violent hostilities raged in the fashionable north eastern quarter of the city, and the entrances to underground railway stations were scenes-of savage conflict.
The Communists used machine-guns in the streets, where mass movements of troops were impossible.! Some civilians are starving, and many have been shot on the outskirts of the city when attempting to escape. A Republican artillery force bombarded the Communist headquarters. The Communists vainly. Called for tanks by telephone and yielded" after an hour’s fighting.
A London cable says -that- the; Spanish Republicans, with trench mortars and heavy guns, are attacking the Communist’s position, and fiercefighting continues, says a message from Madrid. The’ central provincial committees of the Communists have surrendered unconditionally to Coloneal Casado. At Valencia the dreaded Communist secret police have been dissolved’, and the leaders have been arrested. ' 1
