Kohnkohu Golf Club Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of the Kohukohu Golf Club was held last week. After the minutes of the last .annual meeting were read and confirmed, the president, Mr W. H. Kirkpatrick, presented the annual report to members.

It was gratifying, he said, to be able to present such an excellent report and balance sheet. The past season had been the most successful in the history of the club. Starting the year with a credit balance of £1 and finishing the year with a credit of £l7 reflected great credit on the committee, and in particular on the ladies’ committee who had built up a fund for the improvement of the club house and had organised a most successful ball. The club’s thanks were due to the individual members of the committee for their excellent work. The course had been in first class condition all the season and this was due solely to the efforts of those members who had spent so much time in clearing the drains and preparing the greens, tees and fairwaps before the season opened, making it a comparatively easy matter to keep the, course in order for the season. This work was in large measure responsible for the healthy state of the finances at the end of the 1938 season. The major undertaking was the now famous No. 8 hole. For this the club was indebted to Messrs R, Yarborough and M. G. Clapham for the valuable work they had put into the new green.

Competition Winners.

Various club competitions were carried to a successful conclusion, the winners of the championships being.— Men’s senior, Mr G. Ferguson; junior, Mr W. H. Kirkpatrick; ladies’ senior, Mrs Molloy; junior, Mrs Bowler. The competition for the North Hokianga Golf Association Shields was not concluded owing to the repeated bad weather. By common consent the Kohukohu Club retained the A Shield and Broadwood was allotted the B Shield by virtue of the lead it had established in the initial games. i : • |

The open men’s tournament had bee§ most successful and had benefited the club’s funds by £8 9/1. The principal trophy had been won by Mr J. Cochrane, of Rawene. The opening and closing functions were highly successful and much enjoyed. The Golf Ball had resulted in a profit of £l4 16/7. Of the 41 members, 24 were men and 17 were ladies. During the year the club had lost some of its most promising players, Miss R. Dugmore, former ladies’ club captain, and Messrs Edmonds, Kelly and Ferguson. There is every indication that the present membership, will be maintained this coming season. The club was fortunate in having such an energetic executive, all of whom had made the season’s success possible, continued Mr Kii'kpatrick. It was impossible to present the report without special mention of the untiring efforts of the club captain, Mr A. G. Lane. New Officers,

Officers for the coming season were elected as follows. —Patron, Mr A, G. C. Yarborough; Mr W. H. Kirkpatrick; vice-presidents, Messrs G. Andrewes .and M. G. Clapham; secretary, Mr M. Colilns; treasurer, Mr H. L. S. Stoddart; auditor. Mr A. U. Day; club captain, Mr A. G. Lane; vice-captain, Mr T. C. Bowler; ladies’ captain. Mrs H. L. S. Stoddart; committee. Messrs R. Yarborough, J. Molloy, M. G. Clapham and E. R. Farrell, Mesdames,, M. G. Clapham and L. Ashworth. There were two notices of motion before the meeting. The first was carried with slight alteration and provides for a sinking fund to be established to meet any emergency which may arise. It is to be vested in two trustees and can be used only at the direction of a special general meeting of the club. The second motion caused a good deal of argument. It provided for the establishment of junior members from the age of 10 to 14 years at a subscription of 5/- per annum and from 14 to 17 years at 7/6. Such members to be prohibited from the course on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and all day on Sunday. The discussion became so involved that it was moved that the matter be left to the committee to report and find some way of making it workable, the general opinion of members being that it would not be advisable to have these junior members.
