Zone A 4 Favours Central Memorial
At the last meeting of the Zone A 4 Executive of the Bay of Islands Centennial Celebrations Committees, at Ohaeawai, it' was unanimously decided to support the principle of featuring one central memorial to represent the historic Bay of Islands.
In addition, it was agreed that efforts be encouraged to arrange for local memorials in each district.
After considerable discussion, it was agreed that the central memorial take the form of a scholarship fund. The fund is to be subsidised by £330 from the Government subsidy. To create an amount of £I3OO to be invested, the figure set to be aimed at raising in the district was £970.
The income from this fund will be devoted to an annual bursary to be used at the Massey Agricultural College.
The scholarship is to be known as the Bay of Islands Centennial Memorial Scholarship.
This disti'ict is one of the oldest ! settled in New Zealand, and the establishment of the fund will enable the memory of the pioneers to be kept before the oncoming generations as the scholarship is contested from year to year. In view of the importance of agricultural and pastoral activities of the district, ft was also considered advantageous that such a memorial should encourage the furtherance of the interests of the primary industry of New Zealand. The secretary infoi’med the meeting that the total subsidy allotted to the Bay of Islands amounted to £lOl4. After making allowance for the central memorial, the balance will be divided amongst each local district that is undertaking a local memorial. Applications for subsidies must reach Wellington by March 15. It was agreed that the applications from local authorities for subsidies close j with the secretary of Zone A 4 on March 7. From advfce received at the meeting, the following local memorials are being suggested:—Kerikeri, avenue of trees and footpaths; Kawakawa, sports ground; Moerewa, swimming pool; Kaikohe, recreation hall; Towai, district hall, Mr W. Shaw, on behalf of Kaikohe residents, submitted plans for the proposed recreation hall covering an application for a subsidy. The executive approved of the application
